Sex Therapy: An Introduction – 4 CEU Hours

Course Description:

The focus of this course is to provide mental health professionals with a basic understanding of sex therapy when working with individual and couples clients. As an introductory course, we provide learners with evidence-based approaches to sex therapy and practical clinical interventions for engaging clients in discussions around sex and sexuality. The main goal of this course is to help equip mental health professionals with a better understanding of how to work with clients in regard to sex, intimacy, and addictive behaviors effectively within their clinical work. 

Course Objectives:

  1. Distinguish sex therapy from sex addiction therapy
  2. Describe two models for addressing sex in therapy
  3. Recognize out-of-control sexual behavior 
  4. Utilize evidence-based treatment interventions when working with individual and couple clients in regard to sex and sex therapy.  
  5. Evaluate sexual wellness with your individual and couple clients by asking appropriate and helpful questions about sex and sexuality.

Course Instructors’ Bios:

Dr. Nicole Van Ness has been doing Couples and Family Therapy for over 15 years and has an unrelenting optimism for her clients’ growth, and a deep respect for the stories that they share. 

Dr. Van Ness’ experience includes over 10,000 hours in both public agency and private practice settings. She maintains an active license in Marriage and Family Therapy both in Texas and in California and has worked with individuals, couples, children, teens, groups, and families from many backgrounds and lifestyles.  

In terms of her education, Dr. Van Ness has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a professional certification in Business, a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy. D.) in MFT.  Her research is on sexuality and eroticism, intimacy, religion and spirituality in therapy, pornography, trauma, and other areas of sexuality. Dr. Van Ness’ passion is in helping couples recover (or discover!) fulfilling sexual connections in their dull, disconnected, or conflicted relationships.  

Dr. Van Ness says, “I am here to help, not to judge. Specifically, with couples, the work we do in therapy will call your awareness to who each person is, what helps and hurts connection, and help you decide what to keep, what to change, and how.”

Dr. Jacey Coy is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California and holds a Doctorate of Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. He also has a Masters degree in Communication Studies from Texas State University.

Dr. Coy is also a professor and has taught at the university level for over 10 years. He has taught multiple courses in the fields of Psychology, Family Therapy, Social Services, and Counseling. 

Academically, Dr. Coy has published two qualitative research articles with the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy and the American Journal of Family Therapy. In addition, he has presented his research and trainings at academic and professional conferences over the years.

How Course Completion Certificates Are Awarded:

  3. Go through the course materials and then take the quiz at the end of each section. You can take the quiz as many times as you need to in order to pass (70% is passing!). If you don’t pass the first time, review the answers that you got incorrect and the material, and take the test again. It’s that easy! You don’t have to complete the course all at once. Come back to it whenever you want.
  4. Once you have completed the material and passed the quizzes, you will evaluate the course and then can instantly download your certificate and print it if you would like. If you need to access your certificate at a later time, it will be saved in your account and available for download at a later time.

This course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit. 

Refund Policy:

If you have already received continuing education credit for a course, we are unable to process a refund.
