Law and Ethics: Avoiding Unprofessional Conduct – 6 CEU Hours

Course Description:

The focus of this course is to educate and refresh mental health professionals on the subject of law and ethics as it relates to unprofessional conduct. In addition to reviewing basic knowledge about legal and ethical issues, the participant will also learn what unprofessional conduct is, the consequences of engaging in unprofessional conduct, and how to avoid compromising situations. The main goal of this course is to help equip mental health professionals with a better understanding of how to prevent ethically compromising situations, how to make wise decisions, and manage countertransference issues.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain the difference between legal and ethical issues for mental health professionals.
  2. Develop a better understanding of decision-making and contextual variables.
  3. Define what unprofessional conduct is and risk factors for being vulnerable to engaging in it.
  4. Understand risky situations and consequences of engaging in unprofessional conduct.
  5. Recognize the importance of self-care, countertransference, and issues around trauma and how they can impact ethical decision-making.

Course Instructor Bio:

Dr. Jacey Coy is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California and holds a Doctorate of Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. He also has a Masters degree in Communication Studies from Texas State University.

Dr. Coy is also a part-time professor and has taught at the university level for over 10 years. He has taught multiple courses in the fields of Psychology, Family Therapy, and Counseling. Additionally, he is the Director of an outpatient behavioral health clinic in Tucson, AZ.

Academically, Dr. Coy has published two qualitative research articles with the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy and the American Journal of Family Therapy. In addition, he has presented his research and trainings at academic and professional conferences over the years.

Refund Policy:
