Course Description:

The focus of this course is on educating mental health professionals with the knowledge, research, and intervention tools to provide effective services to individuals who suffer from HIV/AIDS. In addition to gaining basic knowledge about the disease, risk factors, and strategies for prevention, the course also emphasizes mental health issues surrounding the issue with this unique population. The main goal of this course is to help equip mental health professionals with a better understanding of the disease and to gain empathy through learning more about the experience of living with the disease. Also, because mental health professionals can play an important role in prevention, this course provides practical tools for prevention that can be used by all mental health professionals, no matter what type of service they provide. 

Course Objectives:

  1. Recognize and challenge your own beliefs, attitudes, and biases around HIV / AIDS and the individuals who suffer from the disease.
  2. Develop an understanding of the history of HIV / AIDS and an empathic response to the experiences of those impacted by the disease.
  3. Summarize basic transmission, progression, treatment, and prevention knowledge about HIV / AIDS.
  4. Explain the role of caregivers and family of those suffering from the disease.
  5. Identify multiple counseling techniques and interventions that can be utilized to effectively work with people suffering from HIV / AIDS.

Jacey Coy, PsyD, LMFT

Course Instructor Bio:

Dr. Jacey Coy is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California and holds a Doctorate of Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. He also has a Masters degree in Communication Studies from Texas State University.

Dr. Coy is also a part-time professor and has taught at the university level for over 10 years. He has taught multiple courses in the fields of Psychology, Family Therapy, and Counseling. Additionally, he is the Director of an outpatient behavioral health clinic in Tucson, AZ.

Academically, Dr. Coy has published two qualitative research articles with the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy and the American Journal of Family Therapy. In addition, he has presented his research and trainings at academic and professional conferences over the years.
